Wilkinsburg Considers Fire Service Consolidation with Pittsburgh

by

The borough is considering a proposal where the City of Pittsburgh would provide fire protection services to the borough. Community meetings for residents to hear details from firefighters and officials were held in late October.

The consolidation plan, developed by a task force of management and labor representatives from both communities, would provide a staffed fire station in Wilkinsburg’s municipal building, which would respond to emergency calls in both Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh.

Wilkinsburg’s fire protection service would improve in that the first alarm assignment would have 24 firefighters responding to structure fires instead of the present eight.
Pittsburgh would offer employment to all full-time Wilkinsburg firefighters and provide Wilkinsburg with emergency management coordination services.
