“Walk this Way” Promotes Pedestrian Safety

The Wilkinsburg School District, in partnership with Safe Kids Allegheny County and FedEx, celebrated International Walk Your Child to School Day with the “Walk this Way” Program, Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 a.m. at Johnston Elementary School.
That morning, parents were encouraged to walk their children to school, where they were greeted by representatives and volunteers from Safe Kids and FedEx, along with Pennsylvania State Trooper Robin Mungo, who reviewed safety tips for both drivers and pedestrians.
Parents were then invited to enjoy a continental breakfast and a special discussion concerning pedestrian safety. Students were also treated to surprise giveaways.
As one of the Pittsburgh area’s few remaining “walking communities”—in which the majority of students walk to school as opposed to utilizing other means of transportation—the District is taking a special interest to ensure the safety of students as they make their daily trips to and from school.
“The safety of our students is our top priority, not only when they are inside our buildings, but also when they travel to and from home,” said Superintendent Archie Perrin.
