FREE HOME SAFETY CHECKS FOR SENIORS AGED 60+ — Safety for Seniors, a project of Family Services of Western PA’s Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Program, distributes kits of safety supplies and provides home safety assessments that educate elderly residents about how to prevent accidents and fires. Allegheny County residents aged 60 or older qualify for a free safety check. Please call IVC at 412-345-7420 to sign up. Trained volunteers will inspect room by room for fire and fail hazards, making recommendations as they go. They will also distribute safety supplies, install smoke alarms, and help clients obtain grab bars or handrails free of charge. Each home visit takes about one hour.

LIHEAP is Pennsylvania’s Low- Income House Energy Assistance Program that helps low-income individuals pay their heating bills through various grants. You can get a LIHEAP application at your local county assistance office or by calling the LIHEAP hotline at 1-866-857-7095. The sooner you get your application in the sooner you can get some help, so don’t delay. (LIHEAP application are available at the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry office, 706 Wood Street or call: 412-412-241-8072)

FREE DENTAL SCREENINGS – The Children’s Museum Pittsburgh celebrating their 8th Annual “Healthy Smile Days” is made possible by dentists from the Dental Society of Western Pennsylvania. The “tooth fairy” will be there to entertain the children ages: Pre-K and above and are free with paid Museum admission. WILKINSBURG TAX COMMITTEE (has a new name): THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS TO RECLAIM VACANT PROPERTIES

The purpose of this shared committee of the Borough and the School District is to enact and administer various programs to encourage the growth of the tax base primarily through redevelopment of abandoned and tax delinquent properties. The Joint Committee currently has two program that are active including the “Willing Seller Program” which compromises back taxes on tax delinquent and vacant properties for a qualified new owner that is going to redevelop the property. The other program isa “10 Year Graduated Real Estate Tax Abatement” on significant renovations or new construction. The “abatement” only applies to the increase in assessment that arrises from property improvements. Applications for both programs are available on the Borough’s website as well as the Borough Manager’s Office.
The Joint Committee will meet the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, Boro Bldg, 2nd Floor and every fourth Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers Boro Bldg, 2nd Floor (whenever it has business to conduct)
