Neighborhood Cleanup Day August 1

One Wilkinsburg neighborhood will be working hard to clean up and secure its community on the third annual Community Cleanup Day this August 1.

For a several-block area around Swissvale and Hill Avenues (near the old Bells Drug Store), volunteers will be boarding up abandoned properties and clearing brush and weeds from yards and lots. The boarded windows and doors will be painted to make properties look more like lived-in homes.

“Response to last year’s Community Cleanup Day exceeded our expectations,” said Drew Gordon, elder at Covenant Fellowship Church, which has coordinated the cleanup days. “We had volunteers show up from different areas of Wilkinsburg, and we had great cooperation from the borough and local businesses. We were able to improve dozens of properties.”

This year’s Cleanup Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 1. Volunteers may come to the church building at 1300 Swissvale Avenue anytime during the event. For more information or to offer your help or donations in advance, contact Drew Gordon at (412) 805-4999 or
